Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Specializing in trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, and complex trauma for individuals from early childhood through adulthood. Trauma experiences can be debilitating for individuals and are often the core to other mental health struggles such as depression, anxiety, and substance use. Trauma interferes with the brain’s healthy development by over activating the Amygdala (flight, fight, freeze response) and under activating the Pre-Frontal Cortex (emotional regulation, cause and effect thinking, memory, and other advanced executive functions). There is also a body of peer-reviewed research that connects trauma with negative health effects including: autoimmune disorders, heart disease, high blood pressure, skeletal fractures, gastrointestinal diseases, and some cancers.
Healing from past trauma is possible and Dr. Angel utilizes a variety of trauma- based interventions form a strengths-based perspective including: Trauma Focused- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trust Based Relational Interventions, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Therapeutic Art Interventions, Expressive Therapy Interventions, and Mindfulness Meditation to create an individualized therapeutic plan for each patient. Furthermore, Dr. Angel is a subject matter expert as it relates to trauma and speaks at a variety of professional conferences on this topic educating other professionals in this area.
